All products supplied to the market by us are manufactured with sustainability in mind. The products and systems we produce have the means to both conserve our most valuable resources, reduce carbon emissions and limit the effects of surface water flooding on people, property and the environment.
Compared to other raw materials, plastic requires relatively little energy to produce and process.
Nevertheless, throughout all our manufacturing facilities we are always investigating ways to make our production lines and supply chains more energy efficient. These include research and capital investment into technical solutions for reducing energy consumption, for example, all our extruder barrels are lagged to prevent heat loss reducing energy consumption and CO² emissions. By installing sub metering it has enabled us to monitor energy consumption on an on-going basis thereby quantifying savings and also allowing us to identify further reduction opportunities.
Across its whole life, plastic is a highly sustainable material.
It is completely inert, releasing no harmful compounds into the environment and of course, at the end of its active life, it can be recycled and re-used.
As the quality of recycled plastic increases, we are constantly seeking new ways to incorporate higher levels of post-consumer materials in to our products, where standards allow. This not only saves on energy and emissions in the production of prime raw material, but also reduces levels of plastic in landfill.
In addition, the light weight nature of plastic products, (up to 94% lighter than concrete), means that more products fit on each lorry reducing deliveries to site and also reducing the reliance on heavy lifting equipment during installation - therefore providing significant reductions in CO² emissions.
Another example of where plastic products perform well is when creating a soakaway. A typical 10m³ granular fill soakaway would require 3 full lorry loads of gravel compared to just 0.15 of a load of Polystorm for the equivalent storage. Thus by using light in weight, high strength and highly efficient plastic products the fuel consumption and CO² emissions for construction sites can be significantly reduced.
By taking an holistic approach to controlling our environmental impact, we have been able to implement company wide policies that drive down our carbon footprint and help reduce the lasting effects of our operations to a bare minimum.
For example, taking charge of our own pallet collection scheme has seen a reduction in pallet damage and waste while providing an easy and hassle free service for our customers.
Other initiatives include the optimum use and re-use of water; longstanding relationships with green energy providers and other environmentally aware suppliers; and a modern, speed-limited fleet of delivery vehicles that reduces fuel consumption and emissions while increasing efficiency and reliability.
We work closely with standards authorities to ensure our products satisfy the performance requirements set out by increasingly demanding building and planning regulations.
Significant investment in research and development, as well as in facilities such as the independent Berry & Hayward laboratory in Horncastle, give us the means to develop and trial new technologies for improved strength, durability and leak tightness above and beyond European standards.
